Concerning MSTS

Microsoft Train Simulator was released in 2001 with no provisions for support hardware. Release of the RailDriver® in December of 2002 was preceded by over nine months of software development including inventing ways to trick MSTS into sharing information (ever wonder why you have to have the HUD visible to use the RailDriver?) Our software allowed us to control MSTS on Windows 98SE, Windows Me, and Windows 2000. When Windows XP was released, we were fortunate in that Microsoft did not make any fundamental changes which would have prevented the RailDriver® from working. With the release of Windows Vista and 7, we were not so fortunate.

We were very pleased to see an enthusiastic group of developers start with a new graphics engine and launch a compatible freeware project. Please read on.

Open Rails

We view this as the best available alternative for MSTS users to continue to enjoy MSTS routes and content on Windows Vista and 7 platforms.

Open Rails is a freeware project designed and supported by a community of railroad enthusiasts.

Open Rails offers native support for the RailDriver Desktop Train Cab Controller and is compatible with most MSTS routes and content.

In its current form, Open Rails requires an installation of MSTS and other supporting downloads from Microsoft.
